Snakes on the Brain

The newly-released “Snakes on a Plane” DVD finally arrived yesterday. In case you didn’t see the movie in theaters, it is just exactly what you would expect: snakes, snakes, Samuel L. Jackson, and more snakes. There’s a hint of plot, some hot simulated sex, and a bit of dialog, but mostly it’s about the snakes. […]

Trailer Trash Yoga

Susan Powter: Valley of the Lesbian Doll I stepped on the scale this morning and it groaned. Gads, this time of year is difficult. I have zero motivation, a huge appetite. I feel constrained by this body, as if it is getting in the way of my doing the things I love to do. It’s […]

From Bad to Verse

I Go From Bad to Verse Donna Sue Rubin, the author of the famous Christmas in 2 North has a new book of poetry out. I Go From Bad to Verse is available as a downloadable ebook from Chipmunka Publishing. Ranging in tone from humorous to dark, Donna’s poetry expresses with great honesty the experience […]

Bipolar Disorder and Sleep

“How many hours do you sleep on average at night, and what is the quality of your sleep?” are two of the first questions I ask every patient on the initial interview and all subsequent follow-up visits. While the hypomanic usually gloats over how little sleep he needs, getting by on 3 to 4 hours a night, the lack of quality sleep can wreak havoc on his mood and decision-making abilities. Sleep deprivation results in feelings of malaise, poor concentration, and moodiness, and even accidental deaths.

TFTD – Take the Path With Heart

“Never take a path that has no heart in it. You can’t lose if your heart is in your work, but you can’t win if your heart is not in it.” — Carlos Casteneda

A Bear of Very Little Brain

“When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain and you think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.” – AA Milne, “The House at Pooh Corner”

Old Folkies

Greetings from the Philadelphia Folk Festival. I picked Sunday this year because the lineup was lean on self-involved whiners errrrr hell, I’d better come up with another name for it. But if you’re my age you remember when the best folk music had a political edge or perhaps some biting social commentary. You didn’t hear […]

Six Degrees

There is a theory of relationships that states that any person on earth is separated from any other person on earth by at most six degrees of separation. Say that I wanted to get a letter to a friend in Germany but I couldn’t remember her address, only the town she lived in. Obviously I […]

Funerary Customs

I decided it was time to drag the intellectual level of my blog up, kicking and screaming if need be, with an anthropology piece about understanding other cultures’ customs. I may have lent that book out. I always feel like I’m blowing smoke if I don’t have quotes to back up my bizarre ideas. But […]
